BACK IN BLACK!
After a long long long time of not blogging... I've decided to post something. I've been working a bit on redoing the EDGE FM section of the site since I'm reviving the show ONCE MORE!
I've got a new cohost, working on assembling some sort of show crew and getting ourselves back in business. I know it's been forever since I've posted a random video or anything at all... I'll get back to it. I don't want to leave this domain to rot... I spent absolutely nothing on it!
More yakkity yak about JACK... a trip down memory lane.
I was browsing an old part of the NY Radio Message Board where there was a special board setup dedicated to CBS-FM's flip TO JACK FM. In there, I found the press release CBS Radio released way back in June 2005... I thought I'd post it here (note the parallels to the recent release made about the revival of CBS-FM)
"JACK" FORMAT LAUNCHES IN NEW YORK CITY ON INFINITY BROADCASTING'S WCBS-FM BEGINNING ON FRIDAY, JUNE 3
Station Features Eclectic Mix Of Hit Music From More Than 10 Different Genres Spanning The Past Four Decades
WCBS-FM Oldies Format To Be Streamed Online
WCBS-FM announced today it has launched the JACK format featuring a unique mix of music and a playlist of more than 1200 songs. The station made the switch at 5:00PM, ET and kicked-off the new programming with "Fight For Your Right" by the Beastie Boys.
Featuring a random mix of hit songs from the past four decades and the "playing what we want" moniker, JACK FM is highly music intensive boasting the most expansive playlist heard on the radio today. Highlights of the format also include limited interruption and less repetition.
"New York deserves a radio station that is equally as eclectic as its listener's personalities and attitudes," said Chad Brown, Vice President and General Manager, WCBS-FM. "JACK FM promises to be unlike anything currently heard in the market. Others have tried to imitate the JACK format, but time and again it has been proven that the success of the format is achieved by fully committing to its objectives and delivering a completely new and unique product. We look forward to changing the landscape of the New York radio market."
Among the many different artists that will be heard on the station, include Aerosmith, Duran Duran, No Doubt, Lenny Kravitz, the Eagles, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and REM. The station's news website can be found at www.ilikejack.com.
In a related announcement, WCBS-FM will continue to exist as an online radio station (www.wcbsfm.com) featuring the Oldies music previously heard over the air.
Infinity Broadcasting launched its first Jack station in July 2004 at KJKK-FM in Dallas. The station has improved its position from 28th to 5th, and currently ranks as the most listened to station in the market with adults 25-54. Jack format changes have also occurred at stations in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Buffalo.
Beginning Thursday at 1:01PM, the oldies format will return to 101.1FM in NYC. After a little over two years as "JACK FM", the head honchos over at CBS Radio don't seem to be too impressed by the lack of success of JACK at 101.1... especially compared to the monstrous success of it's "brother" JACK FM in Los Angeles which is the #1 english station in the 25-54 demographic (THE demographic that matters in radio) basically since it's sign-on in March 2005.
In one fell swoop, the word came from corporate and has spread through the media like wildfire. Across local TV, newspapers and the Internet (even a few websites in Europe), the news of oldies' return to WCBS-FM is the biggest news in radio in a long time.
If you listen to JACK via HD Radio or a regular radio with RDS capability, the text readout will read "CBS-FM returns Thurs at 1:01PM". I tested it out with my Zune and saw it myself.
As for JACK, it will still be alive... on HD Radio and the Internet. Meaning either you'll have to buy an HD reciever to listen or you can listen through the website. I'm currently considering buying an HD reciever for my car.
Here's a little snippet from the official CBS Radio press release -
A little over two years since the radio station’s format was changed to JACK FM/adult hits, CBS-FM’s legendary sound will mark its return to the New York market beginning on Thursday, July 12 at 1:01PM, ET. Once again the music of the 60s, 70s and 80s will be heard at 101.1... home for more than 30 years to the greatest hits of those eras.
Beginning with songs from the Beatles, Motown and the Beach Boys, and continuing through the late 80s, CBS-FM will feature hit music from artists such as Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Earth Wind & Fire, Rod Stewart, the Bee Gees, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Frankie Valli, and John Mellencamp, among many others.
Additionally, Dan Taylor has been named as the station’s new morning show host (6:00-10:00AM), along with contributors Mr. G (weather) and Al Meredith (news headlines). Bob Shannon also marks his return to the station as host of middays (10:00AM-3:00PM), and is joined on-air by market staple Broadway Bill Lee who will host afternoon drive (3:00-7:00PM).
... (skipped to the end) ...
In a related announcement, JACK FM will be available on-air on CBS-FM’s HD 2 channel as well as streamed online at www.ilikejack.com.

More info on the relaunch and hopefully I can record the audio and post it up come Thursday! I'll also be doing a special edition of my EDGE FM show tomorrow reflecting upon JACK FM, my opinions and much more.
It's been almost a month since I've done one... gotta try and get back on the ball, eh?
Anyway, a lot's happened since last time... including the launch of Apple's iPhone. Here's a parody video of the iPhone highlighting the lack of Flash support on the phone.
